Where to Look for Mold
There are certain areas in a house where mold tends to proliferate the most. These include in the basement, as well as any areas of a property that might have flooded in the past. You should also check tightly sealed buildings, as those could cause excess moisture to become trapped inside. A house that has a lot of houseplants that have been over-watered, a house that doesn’t properly remove dampness, and a house that has leaky windows or pipes, or even a leaky roof, could be susceptible to mold. Finally, a house that has a poor ventilation system in place could also be harboring mold.
Look for Signs of Water Damage
Whenever you are taking a tour of a house that is on the market, search for any signs that the property incurred water damage in the past. Check the ceilings and baseboards for water stains that would indicate there was a roofing issue, a draining problem or a flood in the past. If there was long-term dampness in the house that was not addressed, the stains will be there to serve as a warning sign, and you could bet that there could also be mildew and mold living there as well.
Sniff the Air for Strange Odors
Another way to figure out if there is mold in a house is by using your nose. Sniff the air and breathe deeply as you walk through, as you might pick up on even the subtlest of musty odors that could indicate there is mold present. Musty smells tend to be particularly common in areas where the property could become damp or the air could remain moist for extended periods of time, such as in the basement, the laundry room, the kitchen, and the bathrooms. Also, any area of the house where plumbing is present, such as cabinets in the kitchen, could also be susceptible, so they are worth checking out as well.
Ask a Home Inspector
In addition to taking the time to look for signs of mold yourself, ask a home inspector to also take a look around. If mold is found, or if there are any signs of water damage, the home inspector could let you know and you can then take appropriate steps to fix the problem or maybe even back out of the deal.
